A national platform to strengthen local journalism

How do you ensure that local journalism becomes stronger and flows better to regional and national level? In the project Strengthening Local Journalism, local and regional broadcasters worked together with NOS. We realised the online platform that made this cooperation visible and workable.

Working together for a healthy local democracy

Within this project, Dutch Local Public Broadcasters, Regional Public Broadcasting and NOS worked together intensively. The aim was clear: by combining knowledge, capacity and journalistic expertise, to strengthen local journalism and thus contribute to a healthy local democracy.

44 local broadcasters and 13 regional broadcasters employed a total of 63 local journalists. Together, they examined how news from the capillaries of society could be better picked up and relayed to regional and national platforms.

Outcome beyond the project

We developed the online platform that brought together all news items, project information and journalists involved. The platform acted as a central hub for cooperation, visibility and knowledge sharing between the different broadcasters.

Although the project has now been completed and the platform is no longer online, the results are lasting. Reports from local broadcasters now actually find their way to national publication, including on nos.nl. In doing so, the project has succeeded in what it set out to achieve: giving local journalism a stronger stage on a national level.
